Orlando, Fla. — Florida A&M University College of Law Professor Areto Imoukhuede, J.D. has been selected as the recipient of the Steven S. Goldberg Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Education Law from the Education Law Association (ELA) for the article "The Walk Away from Racial Equality."
The national award recognizes exemplary scholarly contributions in education law. In announcing the honor, the ELA committee commended Imoukhuede’s article for its “detailed argument around the Supreme Court’s reversion to a pre-Brown era definition of equality and timely addressing of a pressing issue in education law.”
Published in Northwestern University’s Journal of Law and Social Policy, the article examines how recent Supreme Court decisions have shifted away from Brown v. Board of Education’s vision of racial equality toward a “liberal equality” framework reminiscent of Plessy v. Ferguson that treats superficially same treatment as equal treatment while overlooking the constitutional mandate to dismantle racial hierarchy.
Imoukhuede expressed gratitude to colleagues and students at FAMU College of Law for their ongoing encouragement and inspiration and acknowledged the Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law, the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University, and the University of Illinois College of Law for their early support of the project.
The award will be presented at the Education Law Association’s Annual Conference,
to be held November 5–9, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri.
