Marva Brown Johnson Strikes Boldly on Her First Day as Florida A&M University’s 13th President

Tallahassee, Fla. – President Marva Brown Johnson, J.D. begins her tenure as the 13th President of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. She has the profound honor of having her first day coincide with the University’s Summer Commencement.

“Let me begin by congratulating the Summer Graduating Class of 2025,” said Johnson. “As you cross that stage, take it all in—the cheers, the tassels, the joy of those who stood beside you. But also reflect on the journey. Remember what you’ve overcome, and carry forward the promise of what lies ahead. Your triumph reminds us why FAMU exists: to open doors, to transform lives, and to light the path for generations of dreamers and doers.”

Johnson thanked Interim President Timothy Beard for leading the university with calm, credibility, and care during his tenure.

“To lead FAMU is to step into a legacy and to carry forward the charge of ensuring this institution thrives for the years to come,” said Johnson. “I step into this role with an open mind, a full heart, and an unwavering commitment to protect and extend FAMU’s legacy, while positioning this university to thrive in a changing higher education landscape.”

From the two professors and fifteen students who founded the University in 1887 to a #1 public HBCU in the nation, Johnson acknowledged the sacred and storied history of the University, one shaped by giants and resilient generations. As President, she promises to listen deeply, lead boldly, and work collaboratively to preserve the legacy of this institution while advancing FAMU toward even greater heights.

“I will be visible. I will be engaged. My door will be open. You’ll find me on campus, in classrooms, at events, and in the heart of this vibrant community—hearing your hopes, your concerns, and your vision for what FAMU can be,” said Johnson. “And to the graduates: wherever life takes you, carry the flame of FAMU with pride. The world needs your light—and I’m proud to be taking the helm of the university that helped spark it.”
