Student Organizations Light Up the Stage at FAMU’s Summer Orientation Showcase

The lights dim, the music starts, and the vibes are electric. For incoming first-year students at Florida A&M University (FAMU), the annual Summer Orientation Showcase isn’t just another event; it is their first glimpse into the heart and soul of campus life.

Held in Lee Hall on Thursday, June 26, the showcase features performances from some of FAMU’s most active and dynamic student organizations.

From high-energy dance routines to soulful musical performances, the event gives new students a taste of the spirit, talent, and diversity that define the Rattler community.

“I loved it. Seeing all the performances made me even more excited to be here,” said Taylor Brooks, an incoming business administration major. “It made me want to join something. You can tell there’s something for everyone here. I can’t wait till fall comes.”

For many student organizations, it is more than just a performance. It’s a chance to make a lasting first impression. With hundreds of freshmen watching, groups bring their A-game, hoping to inspire the next generation of leaders, performers, and change-makers to join their ranks.

Third-year business administration major Frank J. Pinkney is a member of the Strikers Dance Troupe. He shared why performing at the NSO meant a lot to him.

“Just two years ago, I was sitting in those same seats as a freshman, eyes wide open, looking for new opportunities. That’s why we took every rehearsal seriously; we knew this might be someone’s first time seeing us live. We showed out like we always do,” he said.

“The Strikers are all about pulling in young, eager men who want to express themselves through dance.”

The occasion reflects the university’s deep-rooted culture of involvement and leadership development. Staff say the event is key to helping freshmen feel welcomed and connected from day one.

“Getting involved is one of the best ways to make FAMU feel like home,” said Orientation Leader Janelle Nelson. “The showcase shows new students the spirit, pride, and culture that make FAMU different from other HBCUs”
