TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In a heartfelt interview, Lenetra King, former board member of the FAMU Foundation, reflected on her transformative journey as a proud Rattler and expressed her dedication to empowering future generations.
“My name is Lenetra King, and I came to FAMU as a first-generation college student in August of 1993,” King shared, her voice filled with warmth and nostalgia. “I came from a small town in Alabama, and I had no idea how much FAMU was going to change the trajectory of my life. FAMU literally savedmy life.”
King's journey at FAMU was one of growth, resilience, and empowerment. She recalled the unique experience of being nurtured at an institution where she felt like family rather than just a number.
“The professors who knew my name, who called me when I was not in class—those connections made all the difference. It was about more than academics; it was about community and support.”

Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management in 1997, King's success is a direct result of her hard work and the solid foundation laid during her time on the Hill. Her career trajectory took her through various roles in healthcare administration across the country, attaining prestigious titles including Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer. Yet, it was her desire to give back that eventually led her to serve on the FAMU Foundation Board.
“Being on the board was just one small way of giving back to the university that gave
me so much,” King noted. During her tenure, King played a critical role in fundraising
initiatives, focusing on creating opportunities for students like those she once was—particularly
out-of-state students from underrepresented backgrounds.
One of her proudest achievements has been the establishment of an endowment funded through her personal contributions. The endowment aims to support students in the School of Allied Health's Division of Healthcare Management, paving the way for future leaders in the industry.

As she approached the conclusion of her term on December 31, 2025, King’s story resonates deeply, showcasing how FAMU not only shaped her career but also inspired her to give back to a community that profoundly impacted her life.
“I wanted to create an endowment to help students who exhibit leadership excellence and community service, especially those who may not have access to full scholarships,” she explained. “I want alumni to take a moment to think about how FAMU has impacted your life. The time to give back is now, especially in these challenging economic times,” she urged.
King advocates for alumni giving, emphasizing that even small contributions can have a significant impact.
Beyond her accomplishments as a board member, King has transitioned into entrepreneurship, leading her own professional services firm dedicated to fostering leadership development for underrepresented professionals. As King looks to the future, she envisions a stable and innovative FAMU that continues to empower students for a globalized workforce.
“You don’t have to compare yourself to anyone else. Your journey is unique, and you have the power to design a purpose that is completely yours.”
