FAMU honors Legacy Society members for commitment to university’s future

Florida A&M University recognized members of its Legacy Society during the FAMU football game against Alabama A&M last month, honoring donors who have included the university in their estate plans.

The society recognizes individuals who support FAMU through planned gifts. Its 129 members have committed approximately $10.9 million in planned and estate gifts to support the university’s future.

Those gifts can fund scholarships, strengthen academic programs and enhance campus resources for future generations of students.

Brandi Tatum-Fedrick, Ed.D., senior vice president for university advancement, said Legacy Society giving represents an investment that extends beyond the present.

“I think what it means to me is about investing in FAMU long term,” Tatum-Fedrick said.

Members demonstrate that commitment through planned gifts, including provisions in trusts and estate plans, she said.

“Being a Legacy Society member, whether it’s a trust or an estate, shows us a true investment and commitment for long-term growth for the institution,” she said.

For Georgette Daniels, a FAMU alumna and Legacy Society member, the recognition offered an opportunity to celebrate her commitment and encourage others to give.

“It is super exciting to be honored as being a Legacy Society member,” Daniels said. “I’m really hoping that the attention that the Legacy Society is getting will inspire other Rattlers to give; to put FAMU in your will.”

Daniels said she included FAMU in her trust to support students and continue giving beyond her lifetime.

“Because I think it’s super important for us to give to the university, to assist our scholars, so that they can become alumni just like me, and also to continue that giving when I’m gone,” Daniels said.

Tatum-Fedrick said she became a Legacy Society member about eight years ago, making her own commitment to the university’s future.
