FAMU Law Helps Marshall-Motley Scholar Sharpen Skills for Future in Civil Rights Litigation

ORLANDO, Fla. — Marshall-Motley Scholar Akheem Mitchell is continuing his legal training at Florida A&M University College of Law, building on a national recognition that supports his long-term commitment to civil rights advocacy across the South.

Mitchell was selected as a Marshall-Motley Scholar prior to enrolling at FAMU Law. The prestigious program prepares future civil rights attorneys through mentorship, specialized training and financial support aimed at advancing racial justice in the region.

“Being named a Marshall-Motley Scholar felt like confirmation of something I had prayed for,” Mitchell said. “It wasn’t just recognition of my past work — it felt like affirmation of the purpose God placed over my life.”

Now in his second semester, Mitchell said his experience at FAMU Law has strengthened both his academic discipline and his commitment to service. Growing up in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Florida, he witnessed systemic inequities that shaped his desire to use the law as a tool for equity and justice.

His first semester required significant adjustment as he transitioned into the rigor of legal education.

“The most difficult part was learning how to study and be thorough within this academic field,” Mitchell said. “Shaking off old habits and embracing new practices is how I was able to find the success I knew I could achieve.”

Mitchell said the experience has reshaped how he approaches challenges.

“I was reminded that I can do hard things,” he said. “Sometimes we wait for situations to become easier, but in reality, we just become better at doing hard.”

The Marshall-Motley Scholars Program aims to develop 50 civil rights attorneys committed to litigating complex cases throughout the South. Mitchell said the program’s mission aligns closely with his goal of ensuring the law operates as a force for protection rather than oppression.

At FAMU Law, Mitchell continues to deepen his understanding of civil rights law while engaging in an academic environment rooted in public service and community empowerment. He credits his faith, mentors and peers for supporting his continued growth.

As he advances in his legal studies, Mitchell said he remains focused on using his education to dismantle systemic barriers and expand opportunity for historically marginalized communities.
