FAMU Names Darryl Scriven Executive Director of Centers and Institutes New role strengthens research collaboration, innovation, and strategic growth

Tallahassee, Fla.—Florida A&M University (FAMU) has named Darryl Scriven, Ph.D., executive director of the FAMU Centers and Institutes. In this role, he will provide strategic oversight and operational leadership for FAMU’s expanding portfolio of 27 research centers and institutes.

FAMU’s centers and institutes serve as key drivers for research productivity, student engagement and community impact across the university. By strengthening coordination and accountability among these entities, the new leadership structure aims to support the institution’s ongoing growth in research activity and external funding as FAMU advances toward Carnegie R1 research status.

“Dr. Scriven brings strategic leadership and a collaborative approach that will elevate the impact of our centers and institutes,” said Provost Allyson Watson, Ph.D. “His experience connecting research, policy and innovation will strengthen our ability to advance discovery while supporting workforce development and community impact priorities for our state and nation.”

Scriven will work with center and institute directors, academic deans and university leadership to coordinate strategic planning, assess performance and strengthen collaboration across research entities. He will also support efforts to identify new research opportunities and expand partnerships in several areas, including public health, environmental studies, advanced materials, agriculture, entrepreneurship and cybersecurity.

Scriven previously led the FAMU Cyber Policy Institute, where he established student and faculty fellowship programs to support interdisciplinary research, national policy engagement, and mentorship opportunities.

He also led the AI Advisory Council through the Office of the Provost, a faculty-led initiative that examined the implications of artificial intelligence for teaching, research and institutional policy. The council’s work is now evolving into a broader institutional initiative guiding the responsible integration of AI across the University.

“I am honored to serve Florida A&M University in this role. Our centers and institutes are critical engines for research, innovation and community engagement,” said Scriven. I look forward to creating an integrated ecosystem among faculty, students, and partners to strengthen their impact and expand opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.”

Scriven was selected following a national search conducted by Greenwood Asher & Associates. The search attracted candidates from a wide range of disciplines; however, Scriven’s interdisciplinary background and alignment with the humanities, arts and sciences support FAMU’s collaborative approach to advancing research and innovation.

Scriven is a scholar and higher education leader with more than 25 years of experience advancing interdisciplinary research, policy initiatives and partnerships across academia, industry and government. He holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from Purdue University.
