BOG Audit and Compliance Committee Unanimously Recognizes Decade of Governance Reform; Matter Proceeds to FAMU Board of Trustees for Final Authorization

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M University has received formal recognition from the Florida Board of Governors Audit and Compliance Committee for a decade of sustained financial discipline in Athletics, clearing the path for the University to redirect $6.214 million in resources toward student success and an elevated student-athlete experience.

“With sustained budget discipline already in place, the ability to reinvest these resources will directly enhance the student-athlete experience — from academic support and wellness to facilities and program competitiveness,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics John Davis. “Our focus remains on building a program that reflects excellence both on and off the field.”

At Wednesday’s Audit and Compliance Committee meeting, members acknowledged the University’s sustained progress, recognized strengthened institutional leadership, and voted unanimously to support the FAMU Board of Trustees in authorizing the resource redirection. The committee’s vote of support follows years of consistent progress on a financial governance improvement plan first established in 2016. The action is further grounded in recent revisions to BOG Regulation 9.013, which now align with the University’s current Athletics operations. The matter will proceed to the FAMU Board of Trustees for final authorization.

The resource redirection is enabled by recent updates to BOG Regulation 9.013, which now permit — under defined circumstances and with appropriate safeguards — the use of auxiliary resources in support of Athletics. Throughout the improvement plan period, the University maintained balanced Athletics budgets, made consistent progress on its repayment obligations, and implemented enhanced financial controls and governance practices.

“This outcome reflects what is possible when an institution commits to sustained accountability, strengthened governance, and a long-term view of what is best for our students. Florida A&M University has done exactly that,” said President Marva B. Johnson, J.D. “We are proud of the financial discipline our team has demonstrated, and we are focused on what comes next: investing these resources directly in the success of our student-athletes and the broader FAMU community.”
