Four FAMU Law Students Earn National Public Interest Fellowships from John Paul Stevens Foundation

Prestigious Fellowships support students as they strengthen their experience and deepen their commitment to public interest work, public service, and social justice.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Four Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law students were selected as 2026 Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellows. The Fellowship provides financial, training, networking, and other support to students working in unpaid public interest law internships. Fellows are selected based on demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest work, public service, and social justice.

The students and the governmental entities for their internships are:

  • Cierra Broughton, Rising 3L | 9th Circuit State Attorney’s Office, Summer 2026
  • Bethany Humphrey, Rising 3L | 9th Circuit Public Defender’s Office, Summer 2026
  • Alexandria Atkins, Rising 3L | 9th Circuit State Attorney’s Office, Fall 2026
  • Gabrielle Henry, Rising 2L | 5th Circuit Regional Conflict Counsel, Fall 2026

“FAMU College of Law is honored by our long collaboration with the John Paul Stevens Foundation,” said Mark Dorosin, associate professor of law and director, Legal Clinics & Field Placements. “The Public Interest Fellowship Program provides invaluable support to students that, by their commitment, exemplify the College’s mission to be a catalyst for social change and provide legal advocacy to underserved individuals, families, and communities.”

FAMU Law leadership also emphasized how the honors reflects the students’ commitment and their future impact.

“Earning the Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship reflects the passion, integrity, and dedication our students bring to public interest law,” said Cecil Howard, associate provost and interim dean, FAMU College of Law. “We are incredibly proud of these students and are confident they will continue to make meaningful contributions that advance access to justice in serving those most in need.”

The John Paul Stevens Foundation seeks to build a more just and equitable society. As a living tribute to Justice John Paul Stevens, the Foundation works to protect and promote democracy and the rule of law, access to justice, and equality by supporting law students, lawyers, and others working in the public interest. The Foundation oversees the Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship, which reflect Justice Stevens' deep belief that a dynamic and effective justice system depends on a cadre of trained and committed lawyers doing public interest work.

“We are thrilled to celebrate these four exceptional FAMU Law students as they join our 2026 national cohort of 158 Stevens Fellows across the country,” said Sara L. Woods, executive director, John Paul Stevens Foundation. “Our partnership with Florida A&M University College of Law remains a cornerstone of our mission to invest in a diverse pipeline of future public interest leaders. By providing these critical grants, we ensure that dedicated students can accept impactful, unpaid public service internships that would otherwise be financially out of reach. These Fellows embody Justice Stevens' profound belief that the lawyer is a guardian of our freedom, and we are proud to support them as they work to ensure access to justice in their communities.”
